IN-CHARACTER INFORMATION

Name: Legion
Fandom: Mass Effect
Age: Irrelevant and unknown. Most likely somewhere in the vicinity of 300.
Canon Point: Mid-Mass Effect 3
Original Universe or Alternate Universe? OU

Personality: Legion’s personality is a peculiar one to try to explain. It is in some ways more accurate to argue that ‘it’ has no personality as such, but rather consists of a gestalt collection of multiple simplistic ones embodied in a mobile platform, what is perceived by others as their physical form, but seen by them as an inhabitance, a means of engaging with the world but not a necessary one. This, although closer to the truth, does not negate the fact that in terms of speech and behaviour, Legion does express a distinct and recognisable personality which may be approximately characterized in familiar language.

Their most obvious quality is, perhaps, their curiosity. Legion was assembled and installed into their mobile platform and given the mission to leave the bulk of the geth forces in order to study and better come to understand organic life forms. The pursuit of this mission is not all-absorbing at the canon point from which I am drawing Legion, but it remains a driving force, rendering the actuated, manifested personality a curious one. Additionally, because Legion consist of a collection of processes, and because they are synthetic rather than organic and evolved largely independently of organic input, this curiosity can manifest itself in ways which might seem inappropriate to organics. Legion’s questions are often blunt, occasionally extremely personal, but they are always genuine.

A side-effect of this curiosity is what might be called an appreciation of organic life forms. They are protective of organic life, as shown by their willingness to fight other geth and the Reapers to ensure its continued existence. This is the primary indication of an actuated, independent personality which Legion displays, as the geth operate on consensus – dissenting opinions are usually heard and processed, but individual processes remain part of the whole, not generally separated into subgroups. That Legion’s 1,183 programs set themselves apart from the other geth shows the beginnings of attachment to an identity outside of the whole.

This burgeoning attachment sets up a conflict within Legion’s personality. Though they are geth, though they fight to protect synthetic life with what might be considered a great deal of pride, they also behave in a manner which is contrary to the norm for their species, and desire to continue to do so. With the time spent in their mobile platform, separated from the consensus, they have changed, and their final actions in the third installment of the series proves that they have decided the change to be for the better.

In the process of coming to this decision, Legion also seem to have developed a fondness for or admiration of individuals, or some equivalent thereof. They repair their mobile platform with Commander Shepard’s N7 armor, expressing something akin to sentimentality or hero worship in the act. Additionally, they occasionally behave contrary to logical rules of self-preservation in order to benefit individual organics or synthetics.

Background: Here.

Other Notables: Legion are both benefited greatly and limited severely by their synthetic nature. Though being an artificial intelligence comes with it greater and more rapid processing power than any organic, and a more accurate capacity for the storage and usage of data, it also comes with it a manner of thought which is not always conducive to the formation of alliances, and limits the modes of interaction and capacity for understanding of which Legion are capable.

In terms of physical limitations, Legion may occupy any platform – a server, a computer, or their mobile platform – capable of housing them. They exist in no real, tangible physical form, save on the level at which their data are encoded physically. However, they are in possession of a mobile platform unique among geth platforms, capable of operating independently of consensus and therefore travelling long distances from the bulk of the geth without losing significantly in intelligence or processing capacity. The mobile platform is made of the same metallic and plastic/carbon fiber (details unknown) synthetic materials as other geth. It is resistant to damage up to and including gunfire, though hardly completely. As damage to the outer shell accrues, the risk of penetrating to the inner workings of the platform increases, thereby increasing the risk of ‘injury’ or outright disabling of the platform entirely. Legion are capable of enacting repairs to the platform, and will do so with whatever materials are on hand – as such, the platform has a rather slapdash appearance, though it seems to operate at full or near to full capacity.

Legion’s synthetic nature makes them accomplished in battle; they can be ruthless and persistent though they will not engage with violence without due cause, and do not continue to act violently once a threat has been neutralized. This is arguably a weakness in and of itself, as it prevents the elimination of long-term threats. Additionally, though Legion are an impressive shot and accomplished with a multitude of weapons, it cannot always act as quickly as an organic might when dealing with too many variables and sources of input. Additionally, it is easily weakened if not disabled outright by electromagnetic pulses and other forms of interference.

Due to their nature as programs, and their platform's capacity for light-speed, long-distance communication, they are also capable of interfacing and communicating with unprotected AIs and systems. In the game series they are also in possession if a skill called 'AI hacking', by which they can turn other artificial intelligences briefly to their will to become allies. In the game this state is impermanent and I expect quick jobs to be equally so for the purposes of RP, however, Legion have also been shown to be capable of hacking other systems with great skill and more permanence, given the time to do so properly.

Inventory: If possible, their M-97 Viper rifle and their Omni-tool. If not permitted, then nothing more than their mobile platform.
